Improve your website and online communications
Pitch: The new website service
Background: You are building a new website. You are looking for or have found external people for design and technical build of a new system. There is a project manager in charge of the tech, but communication is difficult and you are not sure you are getting what you wanted.
The problem: Many businesses think that, if they have a technical project manager in place, then everything will be fine. Unfortunately, that's not usually the case. Building a new website is much more than a technical project – design, content and the way the back end works for the people uploading the content require a high level of engagement by the people who will use the website once it is built.
Aligning your working methods to those of the developers can be difficult and, if things go wrong, communication can break down and costs start to mount and timelines slip.
What I can do: I can get involved at any stage – the earlier the better. From plotting out the project and selecting a content management system (CMS), developers and designers, to preparing and adding the content to the new system.
I have worked on a number of site builds – with both proprietary and open source (Drupal) systems. I know the pros and cons of each and can advise you on what's the best option for your organisation. I also know a number of designers and developers who can help make sure your tendering process is a useful and productive one.
Once a developer and design team is in place, I can help you communicate your requirements. Many development teams are now using Agile project management. As a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), I help your staff to work with Agile Scrum processes.
Making sure your requirements are clear and understood is a lot more difficult than it sounds, but I have a proven track record in doing this kind of work. And having someone on your side working to harmonise your organisation with the technical project manager's way of working will pay dividends.
Once the site build is underway, I can work with your communications team and other members of staff to prepare the content. If needed, I can get stuck in and do some of the work myself and provide training.
Pitch: The basic service
Background: You have a website that you're fairly happy with – you don't want to build a new site or make any substantial changes to the structure or design of the site. However, the traffic coming to the site is disappointing, visitors don't complete transactions and people aren't engaging with your content.
What I can do: As an experienced online journalist and editor, I can help you reshape your content to engage your readers, fix costly mistakes (cf. BBC: Spelling mistakes 'cost millions' in lost online sales), examine your site stats and introduce some Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) logic and look at how you could better use social media to drive traffic to the site.
As a consultant, I can look over your site and produce a report with recommendations on what you can do to improve the site. Or, if you prefer, I can get stuck in – working directly with your communications team to make productive changes and provide one-on-one training if needed.
If you want to make your business more agile and are looking to start using Scrum for your projects, you will need a ScrumMaster. I'm a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) and qualified to fulfill that role.
